Chapter 5 Connected Educator Blog
Chapter 5 of the Connected Educator invites users to apply free and affordable useful tools in their learning experience. The chapter begins highlighting tools that allow you to keep track of useful information on the web. The main tool used for this purpose is social bookmarking otherwise known as tagging. Social bookmarking is used to archive and organize content while sharing it with social connections through the use of "tags." Two popular platforms for social bookmarking are Delicious and Diigo, both of these platforms are used to strategically organize useful information found on the web so it is easy to access. You are essentially creating your own mini library of information found on the web.
The next topic Chapter 5 unravels is Connecting and Collaborating. While there are many different ways to connect and collaborate Chapter 5 highlights blogs, verbal and written communication platforms along with visual communication platforms. Blogs allow for ideas, experiences or anything the blogger wants to share to be posted under their blog. Blogs allow readers to interact, network and build social relations that can help further their professional learning network. With the vast amount of blogs readers and or writers are able to find or create a blog that is suitable for them. The chapter explains how reading and writing is not the best learning platform for everyone, that is why we have podcasts and visual learning platforms. Podcasts allow for people to create or listen to a variety of different audio files that can range from educational to entertainment. Much like podcasts visual platforms are available to learn, connect and further professional learning networks. A simple example of visual platform would be YouTube, although there are many unprofessional videos on YouTube these platforms are only as good as you make them.

Overall there are many platforms that can be used to further your professional network which range from written, verbal and even visualization. These tools also allow for the effortless sharing of knowledge and work that allow for collaboration. In my future career which is finance I believe I can use podcasts and professionally written blogs to remain current with finance trends and changes. I recently started listening to podcasts and have found many educational, professionally recorded podcasts available that will enable me to gain a deeper understanding of finance. After entering into my chosen career in finance I will use podcasts and visualized learning to remain current and master my career.
Do you find you learn better from listening and visualizing rather then reading and writing?

ReplyDeleteGregory,
ReplyDeleteYou provided great detail regarding the content in chapter 5 and the different tools people can utilize to benefit their personal learning networks. While every person is different, I learn best by writing, visualizing and listening. I'm glad you posed this question because it is important for people to understand the ways in which they learn most effectively, and then cater to their learning in those ways. I plan on listening to podcasts to see if they help me retain information better rather than reading. Are there any tools other than podcasts that have helped you learn more effectively?
Hi Gregory! To answer your question, I do prefer to learn by listening and visualizing than reading a writing. I have always liked listening to audio recorded books and podcasts and I find them to be quite helpful when you are trying to get a deeper understanding on a certain topic. Are they other applications that offer aid to people that learn better by listening and visualizing?
ReplyDeleteGregory,
ReplyDeleteYou asked, "Do you find you learn better from listening and visualizing rather then reading and writing?" That's a good question! I find that the way I learn best depends on the subject matter. It's it's mathematics or something with steps involved, I do better with reading and writing. On the other hand, most of my peak learning is auditory. If I hear something, I can retain it and sort of play it back in my head. What blogs and podcasts do you listen to?
